What It Really Means to Heal: Why True Wellness Is More Than the Absence of Disease

"Healing isn't simply the moment a disease disappears. Sometimes, healing begins the moment we start listening to ourselves."

Ask someone what it means to be healthy.

Most people will answer with what they're not.

"I don't have diabetes."

"My blood pressure is normal."

"I haven't been sick in years."

We often define health by the absence of illness. But pause for a moment. Have you ever met someone whose medical tests looked perfect... Yet they were exhausted? Disconnected? Anxious? Burned out? Lonely? Living without joy?

Now think about someone living with a chronic medical condition who still wakes up grateful, connected, physically active, and deeply fulfilled.

Which person is healthier? The answer isn't always obvious. Because health is more than numbers. Healing is more than treatment.

And wellness is about much more than avoiding disease.

Medicine Is Extraordinary

Before we talk about holistic health, it's important to recognize something. Modern medicine has accomplished miracles. Vaccines have saved millions of lives. Antibiotics transformed infectious disease.

Emergency medicine rescues people every single day. Heart surgery. Cancer treatments. Organ transplantation. Advanced imaging. These are incredible achievements.

As physicians, we should never lose appreciation for what science has made possible.

But medicine was never meant to answer every question about what it means to live well.

There Is a Difference Between Treating Disease and Creating Health

Imagine two gardens. One is filled with weeds. The other has healthy soil, sunlight, water, and thriving plants.

If weeds appear in the first garden, removing them is important.

But if we never improve the soil... The weeds often return. Our bodies are remarkably similar. Treating illness matters. Removing disease matters.

But creating health requires something more.

It requires building an environment where wellness can flourish.

Your Body Is Always Working for You

One of the greatest misconceptions about illness is believing that the body is somehow working against us.

In many cases... The opposite is true. Pain may be asking for attention. Fatigue may be asking for rest. Stress may be asking for change. Anxiety may be asking us to slow down.

The body communicates constantly.

Healing often begins when we become willing to listen instead of simply pushing harder.

Healing Isn't Linear

This is one of the hardest truths for patients to accept. Healing rarely happens in a straight line. Some days you'll feel incredible. Some days you'll feel discouraged.

Progress often looks like:

  • Two steps forward

  • One step back

  • Then three steps forward

Real healing requires patience.

Not perfection.

Wellness Is Built Through Daily Choices

People often search for the one thing that will change everything. The perfect diet.

The perfect supplement. The perfect medication. The perfect morning routine.

But health rarely works that way.

Instead...

It is built through ordinary decisions repeated consistently.

  • Choosing nourishing food

  • Moving your body

  • Sleeping enough

  • Managing stress

  • Laughing

  • Connecting

  • Forgiving

  • Being present

None of these seem dramatic.

Together...

They become transformative.

Healing Includes the Mind

Our thoughts shape our behaviors. Our beliefs influence our choices. Our emotional health affects our physical health. This doesn't mean illness is "all in your head." Far from it.

It simply means that the mind and body are constantly communicating. Supporting emotional well-being is part of supporting physical well-being.

Not separate from it.

Healing Includes Relationships

Some of the healthiest people you'll ever meet have one thing in common.

They don't face life alone.

  • Connection matters

  • Family

  • Friends

  • Community

  • Purpose

  • Kindness

  • Love

These aren't soft ideas.

Research continues to show that meaningful social connection is associated with better mental health, greater resilience, and even increased longevity.

Perhaps healing has always been something we do together.

Healing Includes Purpose

Ask someone who's retired after forty years of meaningful work. Many won't tell you they miss the paycheck. They'll tell you they miss the purpose. Purpose gives direction. Purpose gives resilience. Purpose gives people a reason to care for themselves.

Whether it's raising children...Serving others...Creating art...Teaching...Volunteering...Learning...

Purpose nourishes something medicine alone cannot.

The Physician's Role Is Changing

Healthcare is evolving. Today's physician isn't simply expected to diagnose disease.

Patients are looking for guidance. Education. Partnership. Prevention.

Someone who sees the whole person, not just the chart.

The future of medicine isn't choosing between science and holistic health.

It's bringing them together.

Healing Is Personal

No two people arrive at health the same way. Your story matters. Your experiences matter. Your culture matters. Your goals matter. Your struggles matter.

Medicine should never forget that. Because we don't treat diseases. We care for people who happen to have diseases.

That difference changes everything.

The Goal Isn't to Live Forever

One day...Every one of us will face the same reality.

Medicine cannot change that.

What it can do...

Is help us live better. To wake up with energy. To move without fear. To love deeply. To think clearly. To contribute. To laugh. To find peace. To experience life fully. Perhaps that has always been the true purpose of healthcare.

Not simply adding years to life...

But adding life to our years.

A Message From Dr. Saberi

At In The Feeling, I believe healing begins by recognizing that every person is more than a diagnosis.

Our physical health, emotional well-being, relationships, beliefs, habits, and sense of purpose are deeply interconnected.

My goal is not simply to treat illness, but to help patients build lives that support lasting wellness. By combining evidence-based Internal Medicine with lifestyle medicine, holistic health principles, and compassionate partnership, I strive to help each individual move toward greater vitality, resilience, and fulfillment.

Because health is not merely the absence of disease.

It is the presence of life.
